USA: Why ‘Price Stability’ Is a Myth

As someone who works closely with first-time homebuyers and those navigating big financial decisions in New Jersey, I often hear concerns about rising prices—from real estate to everyday goods. The truth is, there’s no such thing as pure 'price stability.' When technology gets cheaper (think smartphones in every pocket), other things—like hotel stays, sports events, or college tuition—often get more expensive. Prices shift because our spending habits shift, not because everything moves in sync. Even central banks can’t guarantee stable prices across the board, since global trends and millions of transactions shape what things cost. If the dollar were truly steady, we might see investments move away from inflation-protection and into other areas, causing some prices to drop and others (like rare properties) to climb even higher. So, changing prices aren’t necessarily a sign of trouble—they can reflect growth and shifting priorities in our economy. For homebuyers and sellers, understanding these shifts is key to making smart moves, especially in a dynamic market like ours.
